Welcome to Lisha's timeline

  • My mom gave birth to me at 40!

Given the fact that my mom is already in her early middle age when she had me, the doctor suggested cesarean delivery(section 3.2) to lower the risk. However, this procedure took a long time for my mom to heal. She told me once about how painful the wound was after surgery and it took a long time for the scar to go away as well.
  • I was only 5.3 pound when I was born!

According to the textbook, I can be classified as the low birth weight baby (lower than 5.5 pounds, section 3.7). My mom told me she had a hard time eating when she had me so that's why I was born lower weight.
  • First Step for Baby Lisha!

After 11 months of birth, I was able to have my first step and developed my motor skills (section 4.6). My mom told me I was really scared and fell down right after the first step! But it was a good try!!
  • "Mama" said baby Lisha

When I was 18 months old, I finally said out loud my very first word "Mama" when I saw my mom's picture! According to the textbook, at 17 to 19 months it assesses whether the child can identify objects in a picture (section 4.10).
  • Weaning! Such a milestone for baby Lisha

According to the textbook (section5.5), the longer breastfeeding continues into toddlerhood, the more challenging weaning becomes when the mother decides the time has come for the child to stop drinking breast milk. In my case, it took me literally a week of the crying nights to wean according to my mom. If I become a mom later, I would definitely take the action as early as I can.
  • Crying baby when seeing strangers

My mom always told me how annoying I was every time when someone else tries to hold me or touch me. I would burst into tear with any strangers approach. Now I know it's actually "The Birth of Myself" (section 5.12) that triggers this reaction where I can recognize my mom from somebody else
  • McDonald! Lisha's favorite!

Like a child who's born and raised in China, fast food like McDonald and KFC were very expensive compared to local Chinese food. My parents will treat me to eat McDonald or KFC if I got A in school. Not like in some western country, where parents bribe their children to eat healthier foods. (section 6.3, Eating Habits and Malnutrition)
  • Permanent Scar! Be careful when riding bicycle

When I was 6 years old, I accidentally rolled my feet into the wheels of the bicycle which caused a fracture in my ankle and I had to have it in plaster for 3 months. I still remember this early childhood injury so far (section 6.4 Illness and Injuries)
  • Learning English at the age of 6!

As a typical Chinese student, English will become one of the most important subjects throughout our student life and we start to learn ABC in first grade, just like how the textbook mentioned that in China all children now begin learning English in primary school. (section 7.9 Bilingualism and Second-Language Learning)
  • Growing fast! 1 inch in two month!

In my middle childhood, my parents always like to measure my height and mark it on a curtain wall. I was growing so fast at the age of 11 where I was 1 inch taller in two months! (section 7.1 Physical Growth and Sensory Development)
  • Grow into a big girl, puberty time!

I had my menarche when I was 11 and I remember before that when the pubic area was itchy because the hair was growing. (section 8.2 the timing of puberty) I was surprised at that time how my body can change in this way and also a little bit shy.
  • Get my first walkman!

When I was 12, I had my first Walkman because I enjoyed listening to music while reading a book or walking. According to the textbook, I've developed divided attention at that time. (Section 8.7, divided attention)
  • Don't wanna be girl without a band!

When I was 14 years, having a band was such a popular thing among my friends and almost all of them had a band. I don't want to be the one abnormal and be viewed differently. According to the textbook, I was experiencing imaginary audience at that time. (Section 8.8-The Imaginary Audience)
  • Getting to myself as a Gemini

In section 8.14, it talks about how we have different self-images, the ideal one and the feared one. As I grow up, I think more about how others will perceive me as a student, daughter, employee, and leader. Sometimes I will be afraid that I will be seen differently.
  • Going to the bathroom together with my best friend!

According to the textbook (section 8.18, The Importance of Intimacy), I recalled myself doing everything together with my best friend Linda at that time. We went to the school, had lunch, walked back home and did almost everything together!
  • Restrictive cultures

Born in a traditional Chinese family, my mom always told me the importance of keeping myself "complete" before marriage and only in this way my future husband will appreciate me. According to the textbook, Chinese culture is a good example of a restrictive culture(section 8.19, Restrictive Cultures)
  • Owl Lisha!

In section 9.2, it talks about how people are different in their morningness and eveningness. I'm a typical eveningness person. I work more efficiently by sleeping late and wake up late. Wake up early always make me feel unproductive.
  • Bicultural Identity

In 2015, my parents and I moved to Hawaii from Shanghai, China. I was 21 years old at that time. I've experienced a bicultural identity (section 9.12, Bicultural identity)In Chinese culture, parents tend to make decisions for you in work, love, and ideology while American adolescences can make free choices in those areas.
