My Culture!!

  • Birth of A King

    Birth of A King
I was born on May 7th, 1991 in New Orleans, Louisiana. I was the baby boy. My parents couldn't tell me anything! They always showed me as well as my older brother and sister unconditional love. Whatever we needed to become successful, they provided!!

    Growing up!!

Growing up I always wanted to be just like my brother and sister! My sister played basketball and my brother was very good with music. It was an everyday thing that I would play basketball with my sister out in the yard then come inside at night and listen to music all night with my brother and rap while listening to music. I was confused at a point as to what I wanted to put my main focus on because I realized that I was good at both! They both tried to convince me but I guess my sister won!
  • All 10 of us!

    All 10 of us!
This is a picture of all of the grandchildren. It was times my grandmother had to take care of all us to make sure we made it to school in the morning while our parents either worked overnight or early mornings. It was a tough time to handle all ten of us with different personalities. However, she didn't miss a beat! Even though we had to sleep three to four people in a bed we never missed a meal and we always had clothes on our backs. Can you guess which one I am? Of course the one mad haha
  • Happy Birthday Mom!!

    Happy Birthday Mom!!
My family celebrate birthday's like holidays. Whenever it's someones birthday, we all get together and have either a seafood boil or some type of cookout to celebrate another year of life! We are a small but very close family that understands the importance of life and health! Plus my mothers birthday is on valentines day so she believes it's more important than valentines day. I tend to agree!
  • Friend or Brother?

    Friend or Brother?
I've always been taught the value of a true friendship. I never was the type to have a lot of friends because I didn't trust people. But my friend here Jamal has been through every obstacle of life right by my side. I see him more as brother rather than a friend and my family sees him the same way. One person I know will always be there!
  • Purpose of Life.

    Purpose of Life.
My family is huge on always knowing why you are here in life. I believe that I have beaten every possible odd. From living in a poor community and having every excuse to be mediocre and give up to a young man that is chasing his dreams. I am here to give back to those kids that are in the same situation that I was in years ago and to give them positive hope to become great in any and every thing that they want to achieve. Without my family core values, I wouldn't be able to share my experiences!

    Top of the Eiffel Tower.
I loved playing basketball overseas because it gave me the chance to let my family travel to places that they only seen on television. Elders in my family instilled the importance of giving back to people who made sacrifices for you. Only my dad has a degree so when I had the chance to finish school and play overseas professionally that was a major accomplishment for my family. Both parents went without to make sure we had all we needed so when it was time to give back I definitely did!

    Mardi Gras!

Growing up with such a different background than most kids in my neighborhood, some times were tough. I always had a strong accent and most people teased me for it while others thought it was cool. Louisiana is surprisingly similar to both of my parents hometowns in different ways. Trinidad is known for a festival called carnival which is very similar to New Orleans wide known festival of Mardi Gras. Overall, the understanding of differences within individuals were always valued.
  • Family Origins

    Family Origins
My mother is from Trinidad & Tobago while my father is from Jamaica. Having this type of blood in my family brings tons of culture that many people are not used to living in a big city like New Orleans. The way that we talk to each other is like we are speaking a different language because island slang is no where close to typical southern dialogue. They always taught me the importance of respecting as well as understanding other cultures.
  • MawMaw Hilda!!

    MawMaw Hilda!!
One thing about this woman is that she is the head of our family! This is my mothers mom. Her and my grandfather who passed before I was born brought their family to the states to have a better living. She worked as a maid cleaning others homes for a minute until she got a chance to work at a local hospital to live a more healthy lifestyle. Everything that I do is for this woman! Without her, I wouldn't be where I am today.
