Muhammad was born around the year 570 ad in Mecca into one of the leading tribes in the area. He was born into a time of gluttony and ignorance which he later in his life tried to remedy. His given name (Muhammad) means "highly praised".

Though his father died before he was born, Muhhamad's mother also passed away when he was around five - six years old. It was at this time that his paternal grandfather took custody of the young prophet.

In a cave on a mountain right outside of Mecca where Muhammad made retreats to fast and meditate he recieved several visions. He was instructed to recite God's word of love. He was frightened and shocked and didn't proceed to act upon the request until years later.

Along with a couple hundred of hiis followers, Muhammad travels and settles in Yathrib which later comes ot be known as Medina ("the city"). He joins five tribes and becomes widely respected as he adopts many roles.

A few years after living with his grandfather- he too passes away. Now around eight years old, Muhammad goes to live with his paternal uncle and remains there for many years.

As a teen, Muhammad frequently traveled with his uncle (a merchant). It is rumored that he once traveled as far a Syria accompanying caravans to bazaars. This is where he was nicknamed "the trustworthy".

Early on in his twenties Muhammad began to work to a prosperous Mecan merchant, widow Khadija bint Khawalayd.

Enchanted by his honesty and character Khadija proposed marriage to her employee and distant cousin (Muhammad) when she was around fourty and he was twenty five.
