After constant disagreements on issues with his party (Republicans, Senator Jim Jeffords decided to end his association with the Republican Party. His switch to an Independent ended the historic five-month period where the Senate sat deadlocked. It also was the first time in history one person tipped the balance of power by switching parties. The No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush on January 8, 2002. The purpose of the NCLB law was to better the performance of certain groups of students by testing students. If scores are not up to standards, schools can lose federal Title 1 dollars. The law is important because it gives all students equal opportunity to have a high-quality education.

My younger sister, Rebecca, was born on June 6, 2002. I became an older sibling. It also caused my mother to stop working. Her birth changed my family as a whole.

Gray Davis was Governor in California. After serving for two terms, he was ineligible to run for a third. The recall election took place on October 7, and resulted in Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger replacing Davis. Gray Davis was the first governor recalled in California's history. Link text

On May 17, 2005, the state of Massachusetts legalized the marriage of same-sex couples. Massachusetts did this in compliance with the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling that a ban on same-sex marriages is unconstitutional. This was the first state in the United States to legalize these marriages, and it led to all 50 states making it legal just recently. My Grandmother's death was the first death of a long loved one I experienced in my life. I was five years old when it happened. Though I was very young, I still remember all of the emotions, and the impact it had on my family.

Clarence Ray Allen was a murderer serving a lifetime sentence in California at Quentin State Prison. He was sentenced to execution by lethal injection for the organization of three murders, following his previous that he was in prison for. This execution raised more question and debate about if execution constituted cruel and unusual punishment, a topic still debated today.

Nancy Pelosi was nominated speaker of the United States House of Representatives on January 4, 2007. Not only did she make a positive impact as speaker, but she was the first woman to serve in American history. When I was in kindergarten, my Aunt Tina passed away. She died from kidney failure. She was a large part of my life, and losing her made a huge impact; however, it made me stronger and I learned to better appreciate the little things in life.

The Matthew Shepard Act is an American Act of Congress to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity. In 2009, the state of Illinois passed their new law preventing texting and driving. This law allows police officers to pull over drivers using their handheld devices. It affects every day lives of citizens today, because it prevents them from doing a task that has caused numerous accidents. Six victims died, and the shooter was identified as Jared Lee Loughner. The shooting was significant because it raised questions about potential political moves. In New York, a new gun law was passed. It bans possession of of high-capacity magazines, requires background checks, and requires a state-registry for assault-class weapons. Though they were not my first pets, I got my cats Dale and Brennan October of 2013. Dale and Brennan were named after the movie Stepbrothers, and are my only pets. They are an added responsibility to my family.

After wearing braces for two years, I finally got them off in April 2015. I loved getting my braces off because eating apples was much easier. It also made me more confident as a person because I was no longer insecure about my teeth.

My club soccer team made it to the State Cup Final our 2015 season. It was the biggest game we ever played. Even though we lost the game, getting that far brought us together, and made us a better team.

The League Championship for my 8th grade Abington Girls Lacrosse Club team was an important event in my life. It was the last year my team was together, after playing with each other for 4 years. We went the whole season undefeated, and winning was the perfect way to end our time together. I made important relationships with people on that team that I would not have known otherwise.

On August 15, 2015, my father had a retinal artery occlusion, which is a blood clot in his eye. It was painless, but it caused him to permanently lose sight in one eye. Though life is not much different because of it, but if the clot was in a different spot he could have died. It impacted my life because it caused me to not take him and other loved ones in my life for granted.

This year for school soccer, I made varsity as a sophomore. Going into preseason, I expected to just be on the junior varsity team. As cuts got closed, I started to realize I had a chance, and I began to work a lot harder. I ended up getting a varsity spot. Making the team showed me to never underestimate yourself and always work your hardest, because it makes a difference.
