Oregon Territory
By 1846, Americans settling in the Oregon COuntry outnumbered the British. Although they had agreed to jointly occupy the land, the US was ready to claim oregon for itself. After much negotiation, Britain opted (decided) to avoid war and accepted a deal. We agreed to 49th parallel as division between the US and the British. It gave us the future states, oregon, idaho washington and parts of Montana and parts of Wyoming.

California was the 31st state that joined the United States. Califorina is on record the fast on-going state in history. Because of the gold rush, California went from a 15,000 person state to 100,000 person state in the matter of 5 years. -

A few years later, the U.S. paid Mexico $10 million for the Gadsden Purchase, a strip of land along the southern edge of the present- day Arizona and New Mexico. -
