  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    President Washington proclaimed a position of neutrality in order to keep us from getting in the middle of the conflict between the two warring nations, France and Great Britain.
  • XYZ Affair

    President Adams wanted to decrease the tension between the US and France, so he sent over two Americans to meet with the French. France then sent over three people with the intent to claim payment before the two countries met.
  • Convention of 1800

    A convention was held in which the signing of the Treaty of Mortefontaine, which was a treaty between the United States of America and France to settle the hostilities that had erupted during the Quasi-War.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    President Jefferson bought Louisiana Territory from Napoleon of France; which ended up doubling the size of the US.
  • Embargo Act

    Jefferson and congress stopped the trade between the United States and the two warring countries, France and Great Britain; thus causing our economy to suffer.
  • War of 1812

    Battles fought between the United States and Great Britain, because Great Britain was causing some foreign crisis for President Madison; such as taking American Sailors off ships and forcing them to join Great Britain's naval forces.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The treaty that ended the War of 1812, signed on December of 1814. The treaty gave no gain to either side of the war. The treaty gave back the territory of each country before the war began.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    This document made it to where the US would not be able to colonize anymore and also made it clear there would not be anymore tolerance of "European intervention in the affairs of any independent nation in the Americas."
