John Adams wanted to defuse tension between the United States and France. He sent two American Diplomats to meet with French officials. The French demanded a payment of money from the Americans. The United States saw this as a Bribery.

Convention of 1800

This was treaty that created peace again between France and the United States

Louisiana Purchase

Apr 30, 1803

President Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon of France. This doubled the size of the United States.

Embargo Act

This stopped trade between the United States, France and Great Britain. This cause an disaster for the American Economy.

War of 1812

British kept taking American sailors off their ships and forcing them into British Navy. American leaders did not like this and called for war.

Treaty of Ghent

Dec 24, 1814

It ended the war between the Untied States and Great Britain. They gained nothing from this war. The United Stated gained respect from other nation though.

Monroe Doctrine

Dec 2, 1823

The United States would not tolerate European intervention in the affairs of any independent nation in the Americas. It also said that America was no longer open to further colonization.
