  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Many people, after the French Revolution, that we owed France a debt and wanted to help them. So, our president, George Washington issued the Proclamation of Neutrality, saying that we would be neutral in the conflict. This proclamation made it illegal to offer any help to France or Britain.
  • XYZ Affair

    The XYZ Affair began when the US attempted to make negotiations with France. Three French officials wanted to be bribed and US ambassadors were very much offended by this offer. This led to two years of undeclared war at sea between the US and France. (Lasted until 1798)
  • Convention of 1800

    The Convention of 1800 was an official meeting set up to end conflicts that happened in direct result of the XYZ Affair. France agreed to return all stolen American ships and money would be repaid to the Americans who had been stolen from.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Thomas Jefferson created a new role for Presidents by purchasing about 827,000 square miles of land - west of the Mississippi. This proved the repaired relationship status between the US and France.
  • Embargo Act

    This act was put into action in order to prevent on any import or export through the US. Thomas Jefferson was highly supportive of this act and it was also passed through Congress. The idea was that the act would demand rights of Americans in global economy during the Napoleonic Wars.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was the second war between the US and Britain - took place after the Revolutionary War - and it was caused primarily by the trade conflicts, as well as expansion. Washington DC was burned to the ground by the British before the war ended two years later. Most of the fighting took place in Baltimore, New Orleans, and New York. (War ended in 1814)
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent was the treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the British and the Americans. Signed in December of 1814, and ratified in February of 1815, it stated that all territory gains of either country would be returned to the way they were before the war.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Under President James Madison, the Monroe Doctrine stated that the American continents would no longer be colonized by other, foreign governments. The Monroe Doctrine led to the end of Russia's claim to Alaska as well as other government's say of what happens in America.
