XYZ Affair- 1797
The XYZ Affair was an attempt to cut the tensions with France. Although, President John Adams encountered an issue when attempting to disable tensions between the United States and France. There were two American diplomats sent to meet with the three french agents “X, Y, and Z” but before they could meet the French demanded a payment of money from the Americans. This bribe issued by the French officials was very insulting to Americans.

Convention of 1800- September 1800
The Convention of 1800 was a peace agreement between the United States and France. After this was signed the hostilities were settled and the peace was restored between the two nations. The Embargo Act was an attempt by President Jefferson to avoid US trade with other countries. Jefferson wanted to stay out of all foreign affairs and, especially, out of France and Britain's war. War of 1812- June 1812
The War of 1812 was fought between Great Britain and the United States, in America, Canada and at sea. The cause of this war was impressment. The British kept taking American Soldiers off of their ships and forcing them into the British Navy service. American Leaders then called for war against Great Britain and the War of 1812 began. Treaty of Ghent- December 1814
The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812. The Treaty of Ghent was signed in Ghent, Belgium, and was on a general basis meaning maintaining prewar conditions. Monroe Doctrine- December 1823
The Monroe Doctrine stated that the United States would not tolerate European intervention in the affairs of any independent nation in the Americas. In the Monroe Doctrine it also stated that the Americas were no longer open to more colonization. Attempts to further colonization would be considered an act of aggression.
