  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Document issued by President George Washington to proclaim that the U.S would not be getting in the middle of the war between France and Great Britain.
  • XYZ Affair

    The meeting with purpose to reduce tension between the U.S and France. Two American diplomats were sent to meet with French officials. In order to be met with, three French agents (X,Y, & Z) were demanding to be paid by the Americans.
  • Convention of 1800

    After the XYZ Affair tarnished the relationship between the U.S and the French, this document was signed to restore peace between the two nations.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    $15 million Purchase of Louisiana territory from Napoleon of France by Thomas Jefferson.
  • Embargo Act

    Act to keep the U.S out of foreign trouble between warring nations.
  • War of 1812

    Battles fought between the U.S and Great Britain after many accounts of impressment that lasted two years. Fought in the U.S and resulted in the burning of the White House.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Peace Treaty ending the War of 1812 without any gain for either side. Each side was returned the property they possessed before the War began.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Stated that the Americans would no longer tolerate European intervention in the affairs of independent nations in the Americans. It also stated that they were no longer open to further colonization and they would view attempts as aggression and react with war.
