  • The Proclamation of Neutrality

    With conflicts and war rising between the French and the British, President George Washington was not keen on getting the U.S. involved. He issued the "Proclamation of Neutrality" keeping the United States out of the war and remained neutral to the problems going on in Europe.

    XYZ Affair

    The XYZ affair was a deal made between the United States and France that happened during the Adams' Administration. The XYZ affair was also looked at as a bribery and insulted most Americans. This eventually led to the Quasi-War. Peace would not be restored until the Convention of 1800 with the Treaty of Mortefontaine.

    The convention was also known as the Treaty of Mortefontaine which settled the bad blood between the United States and France that came up during the Quasi-War
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    This was the biggest piece of land the U.S. had bought. Thomas Jefferson purchased the land that stretched from West of the Mississippi for about 827,000 square miles from Napoleon of France.

    The Embargo Act halted all trade with Europe. This ended up harming many of the port cities in the North such as New York.

    The War of 1812

    The war of 1812 was fought to stop the impressment of American sailors and a few economic diplomacy issues. The war was mainly fought between the United States and the British.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed to end the war of 1812. The outcome had neither side gaining nor losing land, so it ended in a tie. Although this was signed in 1814, one more battle raged on after the signing of the treaty. This battle took place in Louisiana.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was signed forbidding any disrespect to the western hemisphere. This essentially claimed it as theirs and that external powers had nothing to do with them.
