  • XYZ affair

    This was when the U.S. was trying to get rid of the tension between them and France. So the U.S. sent two american diplomats to France. Today they are called X,Y, and Z. When they got there France demanded money and that angered the people in the U.S. They thought this was a bribery.
  • Convention of 1800

    This was an agreement that was made to stop the tension between the U.S. and France.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    This is when president Jefferson bought Louisiana territory from Napoleon. There was a big debate whether or not it was right for a president to do such a thing. Either way it made the U.S. double in size.
  • Embargo Act

    President Jefferson wanted the Embargo Act to pass by Congress so there would be no trade between the U.S. and the two warring countries (France and Great Britain). Unfortunately this didn't go as planned. Ths U.S. economy had a hardship in result of this; sadly.
  • War of 1812

    This war was caused by the British trying to stop the U.S. trade, impressment of the American seamen and the U.S. wanting more territory. This all sadly happened right here in the U.S. It had gotten so ugly that even the White House was burned down.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    This stopped the war 1812. It did this by giving each side its things back that they had before the war had started. This was most important to the U.S. because it caused recongnition and respect of other countries by the way they went about things.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    President James Monroe issued this. It basically says it wouldnt put up with intervention by European nations. If somebody did try this then they would consider it a potentially hostile act against the U.S.
