    Britain needed a new colony for the re-locatons of convicts because of its overcrowded prisons. The settlers sent over 162,000 convicts to Australia in 806 ships. Eleven of these ships were part of the "First Fleet'. Before 1788, Australia was populated by about 300.000 aborigines.

The qualifications were straightforward; Migrants needed to be healthy and under 45 years, although under the "White Australian Policy", people from different races found it hard.
