    General Sam Houston and the Texan army engaged and defeated general Santa Anna's Mexican army. Santa Anna president of mexico was captured as a prisoner of war. This is important because at the end of the battle Santa Anna was forced to sign the texas independence and recognize them as an independent country.

    After the independence of Texas there was disputed territory between Texas and mexico. Mexico claimed the border was at the Nueces river and the united states claimed the Rio grande river was the border. Eventually both troops from the united states and mexico met at the Rio grande river and the Mexican army eventually opened fire on the U.S. troops which started the Mexican american war.

    The treaty of guadalupe hidalgo ended the 2 year Mexican american war. The treaty added an additional 525,00 square miles to the united states including present day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. it also gave Mexican citizens in us territory the option of becoming us citizens.
