Born on April 28, 1995 in Astoria, New York, and raised in Baldwin, New York, he began singing at age three and playing guitar a year later, although it wasn't until he was thirteen that he began taking more formal lessons on his own, and attended Baldwin Senior High School.

After being left off The Voice, Martinez embarked on a small music tour across the states while writing and recording her own music. In October 2013, the singer announced that she had signed a contract with Warner/Chappell Music and later released her debut single "Dollhouse" along with its music video on 10 February 2014.

On 14 August 2015, her debut studio album Cry baby was released worldwide on Atlantic Records. It was certified platinum on 24 February 2017.

After School is the fourth extended play from American singer Melanie Martinez. It was released through Atlantic Records on 25 September 2020. The song "The Bakery" was released as the first single alongside the EP release. It is composed of 7 songs.

In 2012, Melanie auditioned for the third season of NBC's popular US talent show The Voice in hopes of developing and improving her musical skills, and the network aired her audition episode on 17 September. Martinez performed in the blind auditions singing a jazz version of Britney Spears' 2003 single "Toxic". She was the sixth finalist.

On 18 February 2023, after archiving all of her Instagram posts, Martinez teased her new album Portals by posting an Instagram video that read "RIP Cry Baby", accompanied by a snippet of a new song.
