Matthew Sanders along with his friend Jimmy Sullivan, Zacky Vengeance and Matt Wendt created the band "Avenged Sevenfold" in 1999.

In 2001, the band released their first studio album, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet". The self-produced album, which was in the metalcore style, garnered a mix of positive reviews from critics.

In 2009, M. Shadows participated with other stars in the recording of "Slash", the first solo album by his friend Slash that was released in March 2010. Shadows performs the song "Nothing To Say" from that album . He also participated in the song Turn Out The Lights by the glam rock band Steel Panther, singing in a few verses of the song.

He married Valary DiBenedetto on October 17, 2009, they knew each other from school.

Matthew has two children, River Sanders, who was born on July 4, 2012, and Cash Sanders, born on August 15, 2014. They both have the same middle name "James" in honor of their deceased former drummer The Rev.

The band’s sixth studio album ‘Hail to the King’ was released on August 23, 2013. The album charted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and also on UK, Brazilian, Finnish, Canadian, and Irish charts.
