    Nullificiation Ordinance
    South Carolina's response to the Tariff of 1828, which nullified the tariff within the state borders. President Andrew Jackson later made the Proclamation of 1832, which was a threat to South Carolina to pay the tariff.

    Frederick Douglass and the North Star
    Frederick Douglass was a former slave who went on to be the most influential African American in the country. Skilled as a writer and orator, he eventually made the first "black" newspaper: the North Star.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act introduced the Kansas and Nebraska territories, annd opened them up to slavery through popular sovereignty. This popular sovereignty allowed the people within the sttates to vote if it should be a free or slave state.

    Abraham lincoln won the election of 1860 by a landslide, depsite not even being on most southern ballots. A big contributor to his victory was that the democratic party was split in two.

    Once Lincoln was elected, the South did as they threatened and seceded, starting with South Carolina. 7 other states would quickly follow.

    After the South seceded, the Confederate States of America were formed to escape President Lincoln and the fears of losing slavery in their lifestyle. The Confederate States and the Union would eventually fight the Civil War.
