The first attempt for a fly by past mars by the U.S.S.R.. The mission was a falire because the Marsnik did not even reach Earths orbit. Four days later they launched a second Marsnik which had the same result.
-
This was the third attempt from the U.S.S.R. for a Mars flyby. The Sputnik only made it to Earths orbit this time.
-
The First sucesful flyby of mars by the U.S.. It returend 21 photos of Mars.
-
The Zond 2 was launched by the U.S.S.R. two days after the Mariner. The Zond was able to reach Mars but was not able to collect data or pictures
-
Launched by the U.S. in 1969. It was the second succesful Mars flyby Mission. Mariner 6 sent 75 photos of Mars to Earth.
-
1 month after the U.S. Mariner 6, Mariner 7 was launched and was able to collect 12 photos of Mars. The U.S.S.R. was still not able to have a succesful flyby.
-
The Kosmos 419 was launched by the U.S.S.R. and again was only able to orbit Earth
-
Just 9 days after the failed Kosmos, The U.S.S.R. launched an orbiter and lander. The orbiter had no signal and the lander burned up on entry to Mars.
-
The same plan as Mars 2 except the rover was able to land but only lasted 20 seconds before shutting down.
-
Launched by the U.S.. Captured 7,329 photos.
-
Launched by the U.S.S.R 3 days after their last orbiter missed mars. This orbiter lasted 1 day.
-
Launched by the U.S. viking was able to land and the orbiter was able to take pictures. The lander lasted up to until 1980
-
Same plan as Viking 1. Combined they all took over 50,000 photos of mars. Some on it and others at it.
-
Launched in 2001 by the U.S.. It is still curently in use and has taken over 350,000 photos of Mars
-
The Spirit rover was launched by the U.S.. NASA expected the rover to last only for 3 months. The rover lost communication with NASA in 2010. NASA tried many attemps to wake up the rover but their was to much dust covering the solar pannels.
-
Similar to the rover Spirit. Opportunity was also expected to only last 3 months but is still being driven around today. The rover has driven over 20 miles and is currently near a crater called Endeavour.
-
This lander was able to detect a water/ice based material underneath the Mars rock. The lander got damage during the winter on mars and was declared dead by NASA in 2010.

Curiosity was the biggest rover ever built and sent to Mars. It was 3 times bigger than the rovers Spirit and Opportunity. The rover runs off a Nuclear engine and has a Labratory inside the rover. Its was landed by a "sky crane" which was the first time NASA attempted to do that. The rover landed just about a month ago on Aug 5, 2012
