    Original Thirteen Colonies
    The U.S. gained control of the thirteen colonies by conquering Great Britian in the Revolutionary War and breaking away from Great Britian. The Revolutionary war lasted seven years, and weakened our countries economy because we had to pay off debts from the war. The Declaration of Independence was a document declaring the colonies independence. It's purpose was to protect our unalienable rights.
  • Northwest Territory

    Northwest Territory
    The U.S. aquired the Northwest Territory by passing the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. The five states Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin were created oiut of the Northwest Territory. For a territory to become a state the population had to be sixty thousand people or more, they must have outlawed slavery, there must be a public education, they have to have their own Bill of Rights, to get approved by congress, and housing for soldiers.

    We obtained the Louisiana Purchase by signing a treaty, we bought this land from France for fifteen million dollars. The addition of this land nearly doubled the size of the U.S. President Jefferson is credited with purchasing this land. The Mississippi River and New Orleans were so important to the U.S. because it controled the ports, and trade.

    Native Americans such as Seminole Indians upsetted southerners because they were in lands that Americans wanted to settle in, aided runaway slaves, and lead raids on U.S. towns. President Monroe sent Andrew Jackson to the Florida border. He took over most of Spains Military posts and overthrew the governer of Florida. This was uncontitutional because it wasn't President Monroes' orders. Both the U.S. agreed upon the Adams- Onis Treaty.

    Spain gave East Florida to the U.S. and gave up claims to West Florida. The U.S. gave up claims to what is now Texas. The U.S. also agreed to ake responsibility for up to five million dollars of the U.S. citizens claims against Spain.

    Texans captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty declaring Teexas as indedendent. A republic is an independent nation. The problem Texas had with it's economy and with Mexico was the economy was based on farming and little on industry and taxes failed to bring in revenue. Texas's debt rose and made it harder for them to defend themselves. The problem they had with mexico was that Mexico still considered Texas as its property.

    The U.S. didn't want to annex, or take control of Texas because they made slavery legal and that would cause an unbalance in slave and free states.

    Americans moved to Texas because the newly formed Mexican government promised cheap or free land to families. The Mexican government was now making free African Americans illegal, they either had to leave or they would be sold into slavery. The event surrounding Texas gaining independence was the Texas Revolution which started in the town of Gonzales. Texans won at Alamo but choose to surrender at the Battle of San Jacinto.

    "Manifest Destiny" was the belief shared by many Americans in the mid-1800s that the U.S. was destined to expand Westward across the continent into the Pacific Ocean to enhance the Americans economic, political, and social experience. The U.S. government and the Americans believed that God gave them the right to expand Westward and take control of new lands.
  • Oregon Territory

    Oregon Territory
    The U.S. originally shared control of the Oregon Territory with Britain. The U.S. was trying to avoid a war with Great Britain and this resulted in them signing a treaty. Washington, Oregon, and Idaho were all created out of the Oregon Territory.
  • Mexican Cession

    Mexican Cession
    The U.S. agreed to purchase the land under the Gadsden Purchase to avoid more fighting. The U.S. paid ten million for the Gadsden Purchase. Present day states Arizona and New Mexico were created out of the Gadsden Purchase.
