    Treaty of Paris
    The Americans sent three men to seek peace with France. This trio consisted of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay. They were told not to make a seperate peace with England, but John Jay conversed with London, and soon England recognized America as it's own country and made peace with them.
  • Land Ordinance of 1785

    Land Ordinance of 1785
    The Land Ordinance was about how they were going to divide up the Ohio Valley. The lands were surveyed and split up into square miles for one section. A town had to be 6x6 miles and section16 was specifically for a school to be built.
  • The Northwest Ordinance of 1787

    The Northwest Ordinance of 1787
    This was about how new states would be made once people move out in that direction.In the beginning the land was not a state, it was just land owned by the United States. Once 60,000 people lived in an area, they could write a state constitution to be approved by Congress. If approved, it became a state.

    It was made to avoid war with Britain. This treaty meant that the British would leave American frontier posts.

    The Indians signed (by use of force) the Treaty of Grenville. This treaty surrendered much of the Ohio Valley.

    This treaty was made with Spain. It allowed Americans to travel along the Mississippi River. It also gave them the previously disputed area of Florida.

    Napoleon of France bought Louisiana from Spain. It caused a problem because Jefferson needed to access the Mississippi River to reach Ohio. Jefferson sent Robert R. Livingston to offer 10 million dollars for a piece o Louisiana.

    France had a counter-offer for him. He could buy the whole of Louisiana for 15 million dollars.

    Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the new land. They befriended the Indians and took notes of all the animals, plants, and the topography they saw.

    This treaty drew the border between Canada and America. The border was at 49 degrees latitude from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. They shared Oregon.

    Nine new frontier states joined. The ratio of slave states to free states remained equal. Missouri wanted to join, but if it did, it would throw America out of balance.

    It was made between Spain and America. America paid 5 million dollars for Florida. Spain gae up their claim on Oregon and America gave up their claim on Texas.

    The compromise allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state and Maine entered as a free state. It stated that slavery was prohibited above the 36'30 latitude line with the exception of Missouri.

    Stephen Austin led 300 families into Texas. The condidtions were they had to become Mexican citizens, become members of the Catholic Church, and no slavery.

    The military rounded up many Eastern Indian tribes and drove them westward. This was called the Trail of Tears.

    The Mormons moved out to Utah after their leader, Joseph Smith, was murdered. The Mormons were made fun of and there was very much controversy over them, because of polygamy. Brigham Young was the one who led them out west.

    After Gold was found at Sutter's Mill in 1848 "Forty-Niners" flooded to California. More people made their fortunes from actually working to provide others with their wants and needs.

    The treaty ended the Mexican-American War. America got the land of California and the future states of Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. The United States paid $15 million for the land and recieved $3.5 million from the debts of Mexico.

    JAmes Gadsen was sent to Mexico to work out a deal for a piece of land needed for the transcontinental railroad. The purchase bought the southern part of Arizona and New Mexilco for $10 million.
