  • Original 13 Colonies

    The United States gained the 13 colonies by treaty and military force. The Declaration of Independenceis a document stating the American people wanted to part from Great Britain. The American Revolution lasted for eight years and it ruined the new American economy.
  • Northwest Territory

    The United States gained the Northwest Territory by treaty. Five states were created out of the Northwest Territory; Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. In order for a territory to become a state, the territory had to have a population of 60,000 people, public education had to be provided for every citizen, and slavery had to be banned in the Northwest Territory.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The United States obtained the land by purchasing it from France. The Mississippi River and the cit of New Orleans was important to the United States because they could control the Mississippi River with New Orleans. The Mississippi River was our nations trade center.
  • Louisiana Purchase continued

    President Jefferson is credited for purchasing the Louisiana Territory for about $15 million. With the purchase of this land, the size of the United STates doubled.
  • Adam-Onis Treaty

    Southerners were upset with Seminole Indians because they were helping run away slaves and they were invading our land. President Monroe sent Andrew Jackson to Florida and he captured the spanish governer. The act was unconstitutional because Monroe did not ask for Jackson to do this.
  • Adam-Onis Treaty continued

    Border disputes were settled with Spain and the Adam-ONis Treaty was created. Spain gave East Florida to the United States and gave up its claims to West Florida. The United States gave up its claims to Texas and agreed to take responsibility for up to $5 million of the United States citizens' claims against Spain.
  • Texas Annexation

    "Annex" means to take control of. Texas leaders decided to offer land grants to American and European settlers. The government promised the southerners free land and slaves. The Mexican government banned free African Americans from immigrating to Texas. Souterners that moved to Texas at this time had to be catholic, they had to be mexican citizens, and slavery had to be illegal.
  • Texas Annexation continued

    The problems that Texas had with its economy and with Mexico were that they had a small population. they relied on agriculture, and Mexico refused to honor them as their own country. The United States did not want Texas as a state and slavery could possibly expand throughout the south.
  • Oregon Territory

    Great Britain, Russia, and Spain share the Oregon Territory with the United States. Bothe the United States and Great Britain wanted to maintain use of the Columbia River and its surrounding land. Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana were created out of the Oregon Territory.
  • Mexican Cession

    Mexico had a strong reaction to the annexation of Texas, so they started cutting off all diplomatic ties with the United States. They also had American settlers leave California, and no more American immigrants can take place anymore. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-Americsn war.
  • Mexican Cession continued

    The states that were created out of the Mexican Cession were California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming,
  • Gadsden Purchase

    Americans wanted to take all of Mexico. They were trying to avoid antislavery and antiwar activists. The United States payed $15 million for the southern parts of Arixona and New Mexico. With this purchase, the continental boundaries of the United States were fixed.
