Westward Expansion/ Manifest Destiny.

    Original 13 Colonies.
    The United States gained control of this land by making a new document called the Articles Of Confederation, it stated that Congress would become the Central National Government. The Declaration of Independence expresses three main unalienable rights, which are Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness. The American Revolution lasted 9 years and it did bad to the economy because of all the supplies they had to buy but it also made Great Britian return Florida to Spain.
  • Northwest Territory.

    Northwest Territory.
    United States obtained this territory/land by Congress passing the Northwest Ordiance of 1787. There were five states that created this territory. The requirements for this territory to become a state is population of 60,000, education, constitution, bill of rights, no slavery, ask permission.
  • Manifest Destiny.

    The belief known as the Manifest Destiny was shared by many Americans in the mad 1800's that the United States were meant to expand across the continent to the Pacific ocean. Americans believed that God gave them the right to expand Westward and take control of new land,
  • Louisiana Purchase.

    Louisiana Purchase.
    America bought this land for $15 million, we got this land from France. President Jefferson is created for purchasing this land. The United States almost doubled in size. Jeffereson said ' The Louisiana Purchase expand the empire of liberty" and " it provided a wide spread feild for the blassings of freedom".
  • Adams-Onis Treaty.

    Adams-Onis Treaty.
    The Southerners were upset with the Seminole Indians becuase the Seminoles were making raids in the U.S. towns and aided runaway slaves. President Monroe sent troops under the command of General Andrew Jackson. The troops invaded Florida to capture Seminole raiders, beginning the first Seminole war. The United States gained east Florida and for Spain the United States paid $5 million of U.S. citizens claims against Spain.
  • Texas Annexation.

    Texas Annexation.
    The Americans moved to Texas because they were promised free land and they get to have slaves. When they arrived the Mexican Government took away everything. They were no longer allowed to be Americans, couldn't get anymore slaves, had to become Roman Catholic. Mexico ended up fighting Texas but lost, eventually Texas and Mexico signed a peace treaty. Texas tied to become part of the U.S. but they wouldn't let them because they are a slave state.
  • Oregon Territory.

    Oregon Territory.
    Great Britian, Russia and Spain shared the territory with the U.S. Both sides, the U.S. and Great Britian wanted to maintain use of the Columbia River and its surrounding land. U.S. gained California and Oregon.
  • Mexican Cession.

    Mexican Cession.
    The main issue Mexico and the U.S. argued over that led to the Mexican-American War was Mexico cut off all diplomatic ties with the United States, Mexico also made American settlers leave California. The Mexican Government kept rejecting Texas and the U.S. The treaty that ended the war was known as the Treaty of GuadalupeHidalgo. Under the Mexican Cession the U.S. gained California, Nevada, Utah and most of Arizona, New Mexico, plus it increased the size by 25% .
  • Gadsden Purchase.

    Gadsden Purchase.
    The U.S. purchased Gadsden for $10,000,000 and they gained Arizona and New Mexico. Assume the claims of more than $3,000,000 held by American citizens against Mexico. From the Gadsden Purchase the continental boundries of the Unitd States were finally fixed.
