The Original 13 Colonies
The U.S. gained conrol of the land from the colonies the Revolutionary war. The decleration of Independence was a document declaring the colonies independence. The purpouse was that all men pocess the unalienable rights that state that all men have the life, liberty, and the persuit of happines. Also that King George the 3rd had violated the colonists rights and that the colonists had the right to break away from Great Britain. -
Northwest Territory
They obtained this land by selling western land to the public. this also raised money for war depts. It also set up the Nothwest Ordiance of 1787 which divided the territory. Their were six states out of the Northwest territory. There was Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. -
The Northwest Territory
The requirements for a territory to become a state is they have to have a population of 60,000 people, ask congress for permission, draft of their own constitution, must have public education, slavery is not permitted ,and must have a Bill of Rights. -
The Louisiana Purchase
They obtained this land by paying $15 million dollars for it from the French. The Mississippi River and the city of New Oleans were so imortant because they were the center of trade. Thomas Jefferson was the president who was credited with purchasing the land and the U.S spent $15 million dollars on the Lousinana Purchase. The addition of the Louisiana purchase Double the size of the U.S. -
The Adams-Onis Treaty
The U.S. and Apain agreed upon Spain giving east Florida to the United States and gave up west Florida. In return, the united States gave up its claims to now Texas. The United States also takes responsibility for up to $5 million of the U.S. claims aginst Spain. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
The southerners were upset with the Native Americans because some of the americans wanted to settle there and the Native Americans were helping aid run away slaves and raiding towns. President Monroe sent General Andrew Jackson and he fought the spanish and the Seminole indians, took over most of spains military posts, and overthrew the govenor of Florida. This was Unconstitutional because General anderw Jackson did it without reciveing direct orders from President Monroe. -
The Texas Annexation
The word Annex means to take control of land and incorporate into a country or state. the americans moved to Texas because the would recive land . The Mexican government was now taking away the citizens rights by making them convert to the Roman Catholic Church and thay also restrictcted immigration. Texas allowed more people to come in when Texas was earning its independence, but the citizens felt ike their right were being violated. -
The Texas Annexation
Texas went into war with Mexico and declared their independence. Texas captured the Mexican leaderand forced him to sign a treaty and the fight was over, but Mexico still didnt except texas independence. The problems Texas had with its economy and with Mexico is that Texas economy was bases largley on farming and ranching with very little industry. It had very little cash and as a result the New Nation was bankrupt. -
The Texas Annexation
The problems with Mexico was that it was still considerd to be property and Mexican Army took control of it on two occasions but finally ended it all with a treaty. The U.S. did not allow Texas to enter the Union as a state because the south would have an advantage and it could possibly expand slavery. -
The Oregon Territory
Great Britain and the United States shared contoll of the Oregon Territory. The U.S. was trying to avoid war with Great Britain. Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and part of Wyoming and Montana were all created out of the Oregon Territoy. -
The Mexican Cession
The main issue that the U.S. amd Mexico fought over was about who controlled Texas and where the border was between Mexico and the U.S. The Trety of Guadalupe ended the Mexican-American war. The states that ere created out of the Mexican cession were California, Nevada and Utah. Aslo most of Arizona and New Mexico an dparts of colorado andWyoming. this increased the United States by 25 percent. -
The Gadsden Purchase
The agred to purchase the land to avoid contraversy and because of the benifits they were trying to avoid war. The U.S. payed $10 million dollars for the land and Arizon and New Mexico are now present day states theat were created out of it. the continental bounderies of the United States were now fixed.
