Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny is the belief Americans had the right to expand Westward. They believed this was there divine right and was given to them by god. -
Original 13 Colonies
The U.S obtained the thirteen colonies after the Declaration of independence and after a war against Britain. The Declaration of Independence is a document declaring independence, or freedom from Great Britain. It's purpose was to tell Britain to stay away from the colonies, and to start a new nation, America. The American Revolution was eight years long, and immensly decreased, and ruined Americas economy. -
Northwest Territory
The U.S obtained this land after they declared independence. From this land they created five modern day states. The requirments to become a state were you had to have your own constitution, Bill of Rights, 60,000 population, ban slavery, and have public education. -
Louisiana Purchase
U.S obtained this land by buying it from Napoleo Bonaparte, the French leader at the time. The Mississippi was very important to the U.S, this was because it is a huge trade route, and it would boost trade, and increase the economy. Benjamin Franklin bought it from France for $15 million. This land doubled the size of the U.S. -
Adams Onis Treaty
The Southerners were very upset with Native Americans and Seminol indians, because they were killing farmers, and their families, and freeing slaves. President Monroe sent Andrew Jackson. He was supposed to guard Floridas borders, but instead attacked Florida. This was an unconsitutional act, because he did not have permission to do so. The U.S and Spain agrred that U.S could have Florida, and Spain could have Texas. -
Texas Annexation
Annex means to take control of land and incororate ut unto a state. Americans moved into Texas, because they thought they would be free, as thats what the Mexican Government promised. The Mexican government were taking away the freedom of religion, making them convert to Roman Catholic Church. Also, they made them follow Mexican laws, and banned slavery. Texas fought Mexico, in a few battles. A republic is when land becomes it's own country. -
Texas Annexation
Texas's economy was horrible, because it was based off farming. Also, Mexico refused to believe that Texas wasn't a part of Mexico, so they were constantly fighting. The U.S didn't wanted to add Texas, because Texas wanted to always have slavery. The North became outraged, because slavery might expand in Texas. -
Oregon Territory
The country that shared this land was Britain. U.S was trying to avoid war, when they made the Oregon Treaty. The states created from this land were Oregon, and Washington. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue between U.S and Mexico was Mexico banned Amerucan settlers from going to Claifornia. The treaty they made was called the Treaty og Guadalupe. The states created from this were California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colarado, and Wyoming -
Gadsden Purchase
U.S wanted to get more land, and avoid boundary issues. America payed $10 million for Arizona, and New Mexico. The continetal boundaries were fixed. The belief of Manifest Destiny is complete, because with the boundaries there was nowhere to go, South, Spain, North, France.
