Original 13 Colonies
We gained control of the 13 colonies during the American Revolution. The American Revolution lasted 7 years. It pretty much destroyed the economy because of their massive debts. The Declaration of Independence was a statement of the second Continental Congress that defined the colonists' unalienable rights, outlined their complaints against Great Britian because the king violated their rights, and declared the colonies' independence. -
Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny was the belief during the 1800s that the U.S. was meant to expand west all the way to the Pacific Ocean, given permission by God. -
Northwest Territory
Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 to obtain the Northwest territory. Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin were created out of this territory.
Requirements for a territory to become a state:
-Population of at least 60,000
-Draft of their own constitution
-Permission from Congress
-Ban on slavery
-Public education -
Louisiana Purchase
We bought the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon Bonaparte- a French general.The Mississippi River and New Orleans were so important to the U.S. economy because there were many ports for farmed and manufactured goods. New Orleans was also home to many languages and cultures. Thomas Jefferson is credited with purchasing this land for $15 million. The Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the size of the U.S. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
Southerners were upset with Native Americans because they were raiding U.S. towns and they aided runaway slaves. Anrew Jackson was sent to Florida to secure the border, but instead he fought the Spanish.This action was unconstitutional because he disobeyed the president. The U.S. gained East Florida and Spain gained Texas and up to $5 million of U.S. citizens claims against Spain under the Adams-Onis Treaty. -
Oregon Territory
We originally shared the Oregon Territory with Great Britain. The U.S. was trying to avoid a war with Great Britain, so they signed a treaty. Washington, Oregon, and Idaho were created out of the Oregon Territory. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue the U.S. and Mexico argued about was who had control over Texas. The treaty that ended the Mexican-American War was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Under the Mexican Cession, California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming were created. It increased the U.S. by almost 25%. -
Texas Annexation
Annex means to take control of. Americans came to Texas in search of land and economic opportunities. Texas Congress passed a law that banned free African Americans from immigrating to Texas.Texas towns had low populations. A Republic is an independent nation. Texas' economy was based largely on farming and ranching with very little industry. The Republic was rich in resources, particularly in land, it had little cash. If Texas joined the Union as a state they would probably end up a slave state so slave states would overpower the free states and that would anger the North. -
Gadsden Purchase
The U.S. agreed to the Gadsden Purchase because they were trying to avoid war with Mexico. The U.S. government paid Mexico $10 million for the southern parts of what are now Arizona and New Mexico. Manifest Destiny is finally complete because it was the idea that God wanted us to expand all the way to the Pacific Ocean and we finally did that.
