The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 and kept the balance of power in the senate between the slave states and free states. It also called for slavery to be banned from the Lousiana Territory north of the parallel 36 degrees 30.

The Mexican Cession was purchased in 1848 from Mexico. It included the present-day states of California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arzona, parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.
