Luna 1
Luna 1 was the first spacecraft to get close to the moon. It was supposed to impact the moon but never did. It was launched from the Soviet Union. -
Luna 2
This was the second object sent into space by the Soviet Union which was headed for the moon. Luna 2 was the same basic design of the Luna 1. The spacecraft carried Soviet pennants. -
Luna 3
This was the third successful spacecraft sent to the moon by the Soviet Union. This Luna brought back very distinct pictures of the moon. The pictures taken showed the mountainous terrain of the moon. -
Luna 4
The Luna 4 was the forst successful spacecraft sent from the USSR. The spacecraft also was not sent on a straight path to the moon it was sent on a more curved path. -
Luna 5
Luna 5 was designed to explore lunar soft landings. This spacecraft was not very successful because it had a lot of different problems in space. -
Luna 6
Luna 6 was an attempted lunar soft landing mission. It was similar to the Luna 5 design, also carrying an imaging system and a radiation detector. -
Surveyor 1
This spacecraft was the first of the surveyor project launced by the United States. It was also the first soft landing for the US on the moon. -
Lunar Orbiter 1
The Lunar Orbiter was sent from the US to take photos of the smooth surface of the moon. It was also meant to see where safe landing sites could be found for future landings. -
Surveyor 7
This spacecraft was the last of the surveyor's sent from the US. Its goal was also to acheieve a lunar soft landing. -
Luna 17
Luna 17 didnt just orbit the moon it landed in the Sea of Rains. It tested for soil density and also mechanical property tests.
