    Captain Matthew Flinders was a navigator and a cartographer. Flinders also was the first to circumnavigate Australia, and identify the continent .Matthew flinders was born on March 16, 1774 in Donington. He died on July 19,1814 (ENGLAND). Matthew flinders became a navigator when he joined the Royal Navy, but flinders was hoping to be a sailor and explorer after reading the book Robinson Crusoe.

    The Fist Fleet
    There were 11ships that sailed to Australia. The First Fleet was in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip sailed to Australia to send the convicts there. They sent the convicts there because their prisons in Britain were full. Most of the convicts were taken from their mothers and families. Also some of the convicts did really bad things so when they got to Australia they were killed.
    It took eight months to get to Australia (Botany Bay).

    South Australia was the only colony that no convicts discovered. Only free people. The first pioneer settlers came in 1836. They travelled on a boat called Africain in Glenelg.     The AFL started in 1859 on the 17 May in Melbourne. The first match that was identified as a unique Australian code of Football was organised and refereed by Tom Wills in 1858. The league was founded as the Victorian Football league for the 1990 season. The AFL took over and relocated the teams like the South Melbourne Football club was renamed as the Sydney Swans in 1982. The 1991 addition of the Adelaide Crows and the admission of the teams from Western Australia became the West Coast Eagles.

    The AFL took place and was invented in Melbourne 1859 on the 17 of May. There are 18 teams in the AFL today. The first team in the AFL was the Melbourne Demons. AFL stands for Australian Football League.

    A federation is the joining of states to become one nation. In 1860 there were six British colonies in Australia. The main laws of the colonies were made by the British parliament. The federation began in 1860, but at first the colonies had little to do with each other. By the 1890s the idea of federation was becoming popular. The reason why it was becoming popular was because in1872 telegraph linked the colonies and the idea of 'Australian' began to be celebrated in songs and poems.
