Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal between the United States and France. The land acquired almost 82,700 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River. The land cost 4 cents per arcre and a total of 15 million dollars for the Louisiana Purchase. Napoleon was in debt because of all the wars he fought so he needed money and sold us the Louisiana Purchase. So Thomas Jefferson got us over 827,000 miles, over half of the United States, talk about killing two birds with one stone. -
Corps of Discovery Expedition
The corps, was a select group of volunteers to find a water passage way to the Pacific Ocean. Led by Lewis and Clark commissioned by the President Thomas Jefferson threw 1804 and 1806. They were to study area plants, animal life, and geography, and learn how the Louisiana Purchase could be exploited. The corps of discovery did not find a clear water way to the Pacific Ocean but they were still very successful. Only one person died on the way back, this group was very successful. -
War of 1812
The war of 1812 was a military conflict lasting two and half years between the United States and Great Britian. The war was fought in three principals, firstly on sea, land and naval battles, and fought on the land of the Gulf Coast. In August, Great Britian burnt down the White House. The war ended on a high note for the Americans, bringing an era of good feelings in the face of which almost vanished in the United States. The war was scarcely remembered in Britian, USA! -
Florida Territory
Florida was first discovered in 1513, which was claimed by Spain. Then in 1818 Andrew Jackson wrote a note that said he was going to invade Florida. The Adam Onis Treaty was signed on Feburary 22, 1819 by John Quincy Adams which wasn't ratified to the Spanish government until 1821. When Andrew Jackson invaded, he kicked the Seminoles of out Florida and we got Florida. The Federal Government ordered all Florida imigrants to migrate west. -
The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine stated that European nations should not interfere with North or South America or it would be viewed as acts of agression. It also stated that the United States would not interfere with existing European colinies. The Monroe Doctrine itself was coined in 1850. Its primary objective was to free the newly independent colonies of Latin America and Europe. The doctrine stated that they were composed of entierly separate and independent nations. -
Indian Removal Act
At the beging of 1830 nearly 125,000 Native Americans lived on Millions of acres. The fedaral government forced the Native Americans to leave their homelands and walk thousands of miles. Then the Trails of Tears happend. Over 10,000 Native American's died while walking 1000's of miles after being kicked out of their land by Andrew Jackson. In 1907 Oklahoma became the state were all the Indians were moved to and lived there. This was a horrible thing that happend to the Native American's. -
Texas
In 1836 Texas became an independent state from Mexico. Stephan F. Austin led a group of American's to settle in Texas with the Spanish Royal Governer. March 1, 1836 came to order and declared the independence from Mexico, establishing the Rebublic of Texas. The United States then asked the Republic of Texas to become a part of the USA. They did but we were worried of one thing, Texas alllowed slavery but they still became a part of the USA. This was a good thing for the Texans. -
Oregon Territory
The territory of Oregon was claimed by Great Britian. The USA wanted their land and the coordinates of fifty four forty or fight. This meant they would fight if they didn't give us that much land at those coordinates. We made a compromise at the 49 parallel line instead of fighting Great Britian. After this compromise, it ended Manifest Destiny. All in all we got our Oregon Territory and the end of Manifest Destiny. -
Mexican American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican American War. The Undited States acquired over 500,000 square miles of valuable land. Native Americans and Mexican Americans have struggled to acheive political and society within the United States. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo looms larger history in Mexico than it does in the United States. This treaty ended the Mexican and American war and put an end to Manifest Destiny.
