    Louis auditioned for singing competition The X Factor. He failed to progress to the "Boys" category at judges' houses but, after a suggestion from one of the judges, he was put together with Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Harry Styles, qualifying for the "Groups" category.

Louis mentored the "Boys" category, and chose Dalton Harris, Armstrong Martins, Brendan Murray, and Anthony Russell to go through to the live shows. Tomlinson became the show's first contestant to secure a victory as the winning mentor during the final when Dalton won the show.
