Loriel Brown - My Road to Success

  • My Born Day

I was born on August 9, 1984 at 9:32 a.m. in Charleston, SC (St. Francis Hospital)

    My Days wit ReRe

My mother was a single parent that worked the night shift. When she would go to work she would leeave me with ReRe, the lady that took care or me during those delicate satges of life. As I got older she would still babysit me from time to time. I have such pleasant memories of love and giggles.

    Zion Olivet Daycare

I remember this building; I remember the playground in the back, the gravel parking lot, the dimmly lit hallway, the playroom, and the music room. I remember the kitchen where our teachers would prepare lunch and then we would take a nap on those blue cots. I remember the day that I would never forget. I was on the merry-go-round and I sat down, unaware that there was a hole. When I sat down the merry-go round sliced my skin off. I have a permanent scar on my buttocks today.

    Kindergarten - Sacred Heart

The meanest nuns in Charleston! These nuns used to hit us with their sticks if we were disobedient. If teachers tried to do that today thet would be in jail, times have definitely changed. I only stayed their for a year. A random though just came into my mind. Since this was a private school my single mother had to pay tuition. The sacrifices she must have made. Wow!
  • Period: to

    1st Grade - Cathedral

Another private school that my mother paid for. I remember my 1st grade teacher Mrs. Randolph. Years later I saw her on the news, she had amnesia and had wandered out of the house in the middle of the night..so sad. This school closed down in 1991, meaning I had to find another school to go to.
  • Period: to

    Mitchell Elementary School

This school looked like a government building, very prestigous. In second grade my teacher's name was Ms. Clark. It was probably her first year teaching because she was very timid and we sensed it and walked all over her. In third grade my teacher's name was Mrs. Pritchard; she was my mother's former classmate. One of my favorite teachers was my fourth grade teacher Ms. Greene; she was an extremely fat teacher that rode a bicycle everyday.
  • Period: to

    Buist Academy

One must take a test to receive admission into the school. I was on the waiting list since kindergarten. When they saw how well I was doing at Mitchell Elementary they finally called me. This was my first time as the minority; the school was predominately white. This was also my first time experiencing racism head on. My teacher told me "Look at the color of your skin, that is the reason you act that way." Coincidently, she died of cancer years later.
  • Period: to

    School of the Arts

I was a vocal major and a theater minor. The most talented people I ever met. This is where the seed of my creativity was planted.
