    California Gold Rush
The California Gold rush just started increasing a ton when I decided to move to Angel Island. When gold was found in San Francisco everyone rushed to get some. People abandoned their jobs and went on ships hoping for luck. A total of two million dollars worth of gold was found. I didn't want to leave my family behind, but we needed the money. The immigrant stations were packed when I arrived. There was no space and it felt suffoccating and I just wanted to get settled in right away.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Fugitive Slave Law
I was working as a waitress when I got to Angel Island and it payed OK. I was friends wtih one of the girls that I worked with and my brother and his friend as well. It was around this time that the Fugitive Slave Law enacted. The law was used to help owners find their runaway slaves. Of course ,that led to alot of violence and fights due to the disagreement. The northern states refused to let this happen which let to the sucession of South Carolina. In my opinion, it was all crazy.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin
When I was 17 years old I was offered a job as a school teacher. I couldn't take it until I was at least 20. It gave me time to think things through. That was also when Uncle Toms Cabin, the book by Harriet Beecher Stowe, was written. The book changed everyones perspective on slavery. It demanded the freedom and equality of citizens in the U.S. that was promised to everyone in the past.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
At the time I made my decison on wanting to work at the school the Dred Scott Case was official. Dred Scott was declared as not-a-citizen. He was "property" of his owner and someones property could not be taken without process of the law. This left Dred to have an end to the trial and he didn't gain the freedom he was looking for. I disagreed with everything, but I wanted to stay as unnoticed as possible and that would happen by keeping quiet. So I did exactly that. I was twenty-two at the time.
  • Lincoln's death

    Lincoln's death
I was so shocked to hear the news. When Lincoln was killed it was like a wave of sadness came upon America. It happened while Lincoln was seeing a play called "Our American Cousin". John Wilkes Booth shot him in the back of the head with a deeringer pistol. He died that next day. At that point I had a lot of money earned from my job. My family was coming and they were going to live with me. Reconstruction started as well. Lincolns Death
