Life Course Timeline

  • Birth Date

The very first rites of passage. Other life events would not be possible without this one.
  • First Day Of School

School was a very important life event. This social institution influenced me because it is where I experienced relationships with people who were not my family for the first time. I built friendships with kids my age who are still a part of my life today.
  • Period: to

    Highschool

I have a current status as a high school student. In high school, there are cohorts of groups with people of different interests. I felt that throughout high school I didn’t belong in just one cohort as I don’t consider myself to have a specific category of interests. High school has taught me some important roles such as showing up on time and to work hard for the things you want.
  • Started My First Job

As a teenager in high school, it is a social norm to have a part-time job to start paying for things on my own and to understand the value and importance of money and how to spend it efficiently. When I began working I faced some role conflict when I was trying to meet the needs at my job, while trying to do well in my education. This was difficult because I couldn’t prioritize one of them and I didn’t have the time to succeed at both.
  • Got My Driver's License

This life event gave me the freedom and independence that I need to accomplish other expectations in my life such as leaving home. I can now drive myself to work and school and have to pay for car related expenses.
  • Moving Away From Home

Leaving home to pursue my post-secondary education will be a difficult but exciting transition moving forward in my life. This is when I will experience independence away from my family and gain the knowledge to succeed in life.
  • Marriage

In the future when I get married, it will be with someone who has the same values and beliefs as me. This rites of passage will be the beginning of me starting my own family.
  • Having Children

When I have children, I will gain new roles as a mother and caretaker. I may experience role strain because I will have several responsibilities to focus on. This may result in less attention being focused on my children or career depending on the circumstance.
  • Period: to

    Retirement

This will be a major life event and relief after working many years prior. At this time in my life I may face role conflict because it will be a transition in routine that I will have to adjust to. I will take on new roles as a grandparent shortly around the time I retire.
  • Death Date

This will be the last rites of passage to overcome after a lifetime of events.
