  • Wilimot Proviso

    This was a law that would ban slavery in the newly gained land from Mexico. The law had passed in the Hourse of Representatives, but not in the Senate.

  • Compromise of 1850

    California became a free state, belonging to the North, and banned slave trading. For the South, they got slave rules, or laws about how they can track down their slaves.
  • "Uncle Tom's Cabin" first Published

    A series of pictures that described how slaves are treated, about racism, and how there needed to be a freeing of slaves. This was a major commitment to the Civil War.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Senator Douglas of Illinois wanted to have a railroad from Illinois, through Nebraska and to the Pacific Coast. There was so much fighting between pro-slaverist and anti-slaverist that it became Bleeding Kansas.
  • John Brown's Massacre at Pottawatomie Creek

    John Brown was a Anti-Slaverist, and wanted slavery to be abolished. He led a group of men to Pottawatomie Creek, and killed 5 people, 2 of which were little boys.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott lived in the North and had been a free man for years, and yet his slave owner claimed to take him away again. They went to trial, only for the judge to say that blacks were not a citizen and they couldn't argue.
  • Lincoln - Douglas Debate "A House Divided Against itself can not stand."

    A debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephan Douglas about how the House of Representatives was against each other, pro-slaverist against anti-slaverist.
  • John Brown's Raid at Harpers Ferry, Virginia

    John Brown led another troop to Virginia, and wanted to stop arms and ammunition sales in the federal arsenal. The raid lasted under 36 hours, and was arrested, trialed, and eventually hung.
  • Abraham Lincoln Declared President

    Lincoln was the 16th president and the first Republican president.
  • Confederate States are Created

    Southern states, such as South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, etc, had formed the Confederate States, a separate "country" from the US. They had done this because of the difference of opinions on slavery, which led into the Civil War.
  • South Carolina Secedes from Union

    It was the first slave state to secede, and President Bunchanan declared it illegal but never acted on it.
  • Confederate Troops Fire at Fort Sumter, South Carolina

    Lincoln didn't want to attack Fort Sumter, jsut in case other states decide to follow South Carolina and secede. The leader of Fort Sumter wouldn't budge, but they kept sending food and supplies, but not any weapons or ammunition.
