Language Learning Timeline

  • Prenatal-2 years old

    By 2 months of age, infants begin cooing, and around 6 months of age, they begin babbling. Around 12 months of age, toddlers may say their first word.
  • Ages 2-5

    By 24 months (or 2 years of age), toddlers are able to speak using two-word phrases or sentences. Between 2 and 3 years of age, four and five word sentences are used. The majority of common objects and pictures can be recognized and identified.Between 4 and 5 years of age, complex sentences use up to eight words. By the time a child turns 5, he or she has a 2,500 word vocabulary and is usually able to speak in complete sentences.
  • Ages 6-12

    At 6-12 years old, a child is able to read well. He or she uses speech that is completely intelligable, as well as socially useful. He or she is able to talk fluently and with confiedence. The child is also able to repeat a sentence that is six or more words long.
