Language Development Milestones

    0-2 years

    The child reacts to sounds and their parents’ presence, follows requests/directions, communicates with gestures, imitates sounds, says their first word, use very basic sentences or questions (with about 2 words).

    2-5 years

    The child uses words to describe any and all objects, tells stories and can hold conversations, can speak in sentences or questions with up to 4 words, and is able to properly articulate most sounds.

    6-12 years

    Children learn to understand books/reading, identify rhyming or similar-sounding words, know words from sight, write their name, remember information, follow complex verbal directions, match words and their sounds to their written form, spell, organize or summarize information, reread and revise writing, and analyze information that they read to understand or discuss it.
