    Baby looks for place where familiar voice comes from, also coos and chuckles.
  • 8 Months Old

    Baby begins gesturing towards things they want or need.
  • 9-12 Months

    Begins recreating sounds that others may consider to be close to first words
  • 12-18 Months

    Baby/Toddler begins to use ritual words like hi, bye, thank you.
  • 2-3 Years

    Toddler begins to use language in imaginative ways.
  • 4 Years

    Child can change style of talking to fit conversations.
  • 5 Years

    Child knows almost all of language.
  • 6 Years

    Child will begin learning to read and write, the visual part of language.
  • Adolescence

    Children are able to competently engage in conversations and understands multiple word meanings.
  • 18 Years

    By this time, teenagers have a well developed lexicon and are able to read, write, use technology and communicate with other people in adult conversations.
