    Christpher columbus arrived in the America
    Christopher columbus aimed to reach asia by sailing west across the atlantic. in 1492 spanish rulers gave him money to carry out his plan. After sailing aross the atlantic, columbus sighted land in the Caribbean Sea but thought he had reached Asia. After columbus, Spain launched many voyages of exploration. The arrival of Europeans had a serious effect on Native Americans though some natives were made laborers and died while working under harsh conditon.

    In April 1630 he sailed on the Arbella, one of the four ships that brought 400 Puritan men, women, and children to America. He believed that the english church needed reforming. He set aside his country estate in england and agreed to join a new venture: planting a colony in North America. As one of the leaders of that new colony he helped shape how Americans see themselves.

    King George was faced with paying off the debt Britian had accumulated during the French and Indian War. In 1763 King George appointed George Grenville, a financial experts as his prime minister. Grenville believed that the colonies were smuggling good rather than paying taxes on them. In 1764 Grenville urged parliment to pass the Sugar Act and in 1765, the Stamp act.These Acts were going to tax the people and the people were furious and boycatted(refused to buy) British goods.

    Tension incresed in Boston. In 1770 some british soldiers fired on a mob and killed sseveral colonists, prompting angry colonial leaders to call the event the Boston Massacre. Passions cooled and the British removed all taxes but one. In 1773 the British granted a British company the sole right to handle the tea trade. A group of colonists dumped tea into the Boston harbor in protest. To punish Massachusetts Parliment pased the Intolerable Acts in 1774.

    Women didnt have rights in the 1800's the men had all the rights. Women worked and had to give all there money to the men. They worked long hours in bad areas.Women had no voice married who ever wanted to marry that women. And in marriage the women promise obiedence to her husband.

    Thomas Jefferson won a close election and bitter election in the 1800 to become president. Jefferson wanted to make federal goverment smaller. At the same time, the supreme court acted to increase its power. Jefferson expanded American territory and he bought the vast Louisiana Territory from France. The land stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The purchase doubled the size of the United States.

Southerners continued to rely on slave labpr to grow cotton and rice and taacco. The rise of factories changed the nature of work-long hours,hot and noisy.

    During Jeffersons two terms as president Britain and France fought a war. Both sides threatened American merchant ships. The British a;so seized sailors from American ships and forced them to join the British Navy. Finally in 1812 Congress declared war on Great Britian.

    In 1814 The Treaty of Ghent, ended the war between America and Great Britian, but created no clear winner. The war had important results though. The federal party died out. The war also led Americans to develope their own industrys. And it showed that the United States was truly independent of Britian.

    The Indian Removal Act, which forced Native Americans out of the Southeast. The supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional. Jackson defied the Court, which could not enfource its ruling. The cherokees were the last to move west.

    Goverment Moving the Native Americans around

    Earlier the goverment had granted the entire Plains to the Native Americans. As more white settlers wished to move there, the goverment made new treaties restricting the land that Native Americans could use. Conflict erupted. In 1864 a militia attacked a camp of Cheyanne killing 200, mostly women and children. Meanwhile the Siox Chief Red Cloud protested white settlers moving to the Black Hills an atea sacred to his people.

    Native Americans of the Great plains followed a way of life centered on the horse and buffalo. Buffalo provided food,clothing,shelter, and other essentials. These Natice Americans lived in family groups or large clans. The leader of the tribe ruled by counsel rather than force.

    Congress created the Freedmens Bureau to help former slaves. It passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which garanteed the civil rights to African Americans. Congress also passed the 14th amendment which made African Americans citizens. In 1867 congress enacted new reconstruction legislation.

    In 1868 Grant was elected president of the United States with the help of African American votes. In 1870 the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified. It banned states from denying the right to vote to all African Americans.

    As settlement continued in the West the nation ws being transformed by vast changes in technology. Fuel was in the form of kerosene refined from oil or coal. Iron became even more usefull when the Bessemer process developed about the 1850's, allowed workers toefficiently turn it into steel. Steel was used to help build rail roads and for farm tools such as the reaper and the plow and to make cans for preserving food. Cities built electric railways, businesses built factories powered by elec.

    After the civil war the demand for beef sky rocketed sharply in the growing population of Eastern cities. Ranch owners began to move their cattle North to be shipped by rail to chicago. Soon tens of thousands of cattle were driven on te Chisholm trail from tecas to kansas. Abilene Kansas became a major shipping point. Cattle began to over run the buffalo.

    Immigrants were main workers for people because they paid cheep to work. Sometimes 2-3 familys would occupy a 1 family house. Houses were very unsanitary,and well over croweded. Streets had garbage on them and horse poop all over the place which made the streets very unsanitary espcially people brething all the bad air some people got sick and some died.
