He was on vacation with his family in Rome, Italy and attemped suicide by overdosing in his hotel room. Courtney found him and he was rushed to the hospital and was in a coma.

Kurt commited suicide in the guest house behind his house in Seattle at the age of 27. He killed himself instantly by using a shotgun and firing it into his mouth. He left a long goodbye note addressing his fans, wife and young daughter.

Courtney was trying to decide what to do with what Kurt had left behind. In 2002 she decided to put all of the unreleased soundtracks together into and album and have it released.
