    Personal Literacy History

Personal events, experiences and details that have shaped my literacy history and the way I will implement literacy in the classroom.
  • Story Time with Dad

    Story Time with Dad
When I started pre-school and my Dad spent more time at home, he used to read to me a lot, all different kinds of stories. Still to this day I cherish those moments with him, and will always remember that his favorite books to read to me were "The Bearnstein Bears." In my classroom, I will engage my students with read-aloud as a strategy to engage them in different subject areas. Many times children like stories but would rather hear someone else read it than themselves.
  • Grandma's Influence

    Grandma's Influence
When I began kindergarten, my Grandma was the one looking after me while my parents were at work. She was from Hungary and had a very strong accent. Her inability to speak, read or write in English properly has made me realize as an adult in the teacher program the importance of accommodating and modifying lessons. I will ensure that while teaching literacy all students with special needs will receive learning that is best suited for their academic needs.
  • Reading Rabbit- Computer Game

    Reading Rabbit- Computer Game
In my early years of elementary school, I remember playing educational computer games to help with reading, making words and other areas of literacy; they were called “Reading Rabbit.” It is important to incorporate educational games in the classroom. I intend to use technology as a way to enhance my literacy program and learning environment for my students.
  • Chicken Soup for the Soul

    Chicken Soup for the Soul
In elementary school I began reading The Chicken Soup for the Soul books. To this day, they are still some of the favorites to read. I will definitely introduce this book series in my classroom. They are directed towards different age groups (young and old) and specific groups of people. It is a good way of addressing and embracing diversity through literacy in the classroom.
  • A sisters help

    A sisters help
My sisters has always been a role model to me throughout my life, but one thing she does not realize she has helped me with is my writing ability. My sister used to edit all of my written pieces, giving me constructive feedback. I think it is crucial for students to receive feedback from someone other than their teacher. In my classroom I will implement peer-evaluations as a way for students to identify areas that need work and be able to give constructive feedback to their fellow classmates.
  • Scar Tissue-Biographies

    Scar Tissue-Biographies
One of my favorite biographies was "Scar Tissue" because it was written by the lead singer from my favorite band Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think it is important to find people or areas that your students are interested in. In my classroom I will bring in reading materials based on what my students like at the time. From there written activities and other tasks can be created which will have the students focused and engaged.
  • Creative Writers Class

    Creative Writers Class
In Grade 12 I took a creative writing class which helped me to be more confident and expressive with my writing. I will creative writing my classrooms as a way to help children use their imaginations by thinking outside of the box. My hope is that they broaden their thought processes which will help and extend into other areas of their schooling.
  • PostSecret- Picture Books

    PostSecret- Picture Books
Towards, the end of High School I was introduced to the picture books known as Post Secret. They helped me create connections with complete strangers through inferences of the images displayed. These books portrayed content not appropriate for elementary school. However, I will use other types of picture books in my classroom, as a way to help children with reading comprehension strategies; like inference.
  • Brock University- Undergrad

    Brock University- Undergrad
After, attending a different University for one year, I finally began my journey at Brock in the Child and Youth Studies program. I give credit to Brock in teaching me how to critically think. Critical thinking helps with reading and writing. I will help my students become critical thinkers by helping to build their skills in literacy during the foundation years. All areas of literacy must be of focus in the classroom, with accommodations and modifications done to fit the needs of the children.
  • Teacher Education at Brock

    Teacher Education at Brock
At the end of summer in 2013 began my adventure into teacher education at Brock University. Many strategies and approaches and ways to teach and interact with children have been learned during this time. I accredit my language arts class giving me the confidence to teach literacy to the primary grades. Using alphabet books, BitStrips, literacy circles, picture books just to name a few, I feel confident in being able to provide children with an effective learning environment, especially in litera
