Slaves of the Harvest
In 1745 Russian explorers invaded the Aleutian Chain in Alaska, taking the Aleuts as slaves. When the pribilof islands (my home town) was invaded they were taken as slave workers to be fur hunters. All fur was to be brought back to the Russian commanders to be brought back to Russia and sold. This forever changing the lives of the Aleut people. -
Russian Invasion
Russian explorers invaded Aleutian Islands to take fur to sell. 16 Aleuts were left dead. Just the beginning of the Aleut people being enslaved. -
US bought Alaska
When the United States purchased the Fur Trade in the Aleutian Islands was taken over by the US government, and some how the conditions they lived in got worse- as they were treated worse. The only reason the Aleuts were given food was that they harvested the seals for them. The Aleut people were slaves of the harvest before and after WWII. -
The building of "real house"
Until 1870 the Aleut people lived in "barabras". These were homes that were underground to shield the wind and were heated by seal blubber. In 1870 the American Government built houses for themselves and for the Aleut people so they could "own" their land. The Aleut people were forced to move into these wooden houses that were harder to heat, were smaller, and would easily catch on fire. -
The disappearance of the seals
In 1889, a young Russian officer noticed that the amount of fur seals was diminished. When Russia invaded the Aleutian islands there was an estimate of 5 million fur seals, and what was left was maybe 100,000 male seals. (Males are the only seals that are harvested) Changing the future for Aleuts after their freedom was gained. -
The Serum Run
My great grandfather, Edgar Nollner, was the last surviving man who raced his sled dogs from Nenana to Nome, AK. In 1925 my great grandfather was asked to take diphtheria serum to Nome to help with an Epidemic of Diphtheria. It was the middle of winter and through a white out snow storm he traveled his dogs their in half of the normal time. The long ride being 674 miles long. He was acknowledged to be a true hero. -

Evacuation of Pribilof Islands
During WWII the US Government evacuated the Pribilof Islands, due to Japan invading Aleutian islands Attu and Kiska. Many towns along the Aleutian Chain, were evacuated. My home town, St. Paul island being one of them. My great grandmother being one of them. They were evacuated to Funter Bay where they were sent to internment camps to live for three years. They were to live in a deserted salmon cannery with no running water, walls, toilets or food. -
Nana was Born in Juneau, AK
One year after being evacuated from their homes, my great grandmother was flown to Juneau, AK to give birth to my nana in Juneau, AK. My nana spent the first year of her life in the internment camp. Living with no running water and terrible conditions. -
Return of the Unangax People
3 years later, the Unangax people were taken back to their homes.2 years after the war was ended. The homes and churches that were ransacked and destroyed by the military men that lived in them. -
Edgar Nollner Saves Air Force Officers
In 1953, my great grandfather was gathering wood with his dog team and he heard a plane crash. He took his dogs to help and they saved two Air Force officers from freezing to death in negative 54 degree weather. -
Fur Seal Act of 1966
An act to help protect the fur seals. The act states that fur seals and sea otters were only to be hunted by Native Peoples. -
