John Clayton Mayer was born on October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport, CT. Mayer soon picked up the guitar at age 13, and was playing at local blues clubs both solo and with the band Villanova Junction ("John Mayer"). -
Berklee College of Music
"When the idea of going to Berklee came up, I had dropped songwriting for the moment. I never thought of going to Berklee to become a great songwriter; I wanted to learn how to be the best guitar player going. I went for the first semester with that in mind. Leaving Berklee for Atlanta
"I made a friend at Berklee, Clay Cook, who was from Atlanta, and we started writing songs together. We both decided to withdraw from the college at the same time. We cowrote "No Such Thing." I never would have thought to put those in there I was stuck there in Atlanta, I kind of looked at my guitar and said, "It's just you and me. I'll go where you take me" (Berklee College of Music). -
Mayer's Big Break
When Mayer appeared at the 2000's South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX, he signed with Aware Records, a Columbia subsidiary. His first full-length album, Room for Squares was picked up by Columbia for wide release ("John Mayer"). -

Mayer makes an unexpected move when he forms a bluesy, guitar-driven band called the John Mayer Trio. They release an album, Try! which included veteran session musicians Steve Jordan on drums and Pino Palladino on bass ("John Mayer"). -
