    John Dewy was born in Burlington, Vermont.

  • Education Reform

    Dewy was progressive with education. He believed in learning through experience. He shared that students should learn with interactions in the present. He still acknowledged the value of learning from the past as well. Dewy lectured all over the world about education reform and opened schools to allow for the study of his theories to develop them.

    Dewy wrote The Reflex Arc Concept in Psychology to combat the reflex arc methodology. At the time the reflex arc was only accounting for events that took place between a passive stimulus to generate a response. The problem was we do not perceive stimuli passively.

    Dewy believed that education was tied to humans. It could be viewed to gain a general understanding of humans. He wanted to study everyday life instead of what the field was doing to become specialized. Dewy found it was important to understand the students background and developed the thought of having the curriculum align with the students' interests.

    Dewy developed the concept of experience over the course of his career. His major influences and discoveries convinced him that experience was important to the broad theory of nature and humanity's axiological place within it. He wrote at least five book or papers on the subject from 1905 to 1934 continuously evolving the concept of experience.
