    Giusseppe Garibaldi declares himself dictator of Sicily after defeating Neopoltan forces.
  • Victor Emmanuel II becomes king of Italy

    Victor Emmanuel II became the first king of Italy after the new parliment of unified Italy proclaimed him their leader.

    Camillo Cavour fell victim to Malaria, and bled himself to death.

    Unification of Germany

    Germany was split up into mny small nation states including the power of Russia but after this span of over five years, Germany was unified.

    Austro-Prussian War

    Bismarck baited Austria into war intending to end the Austrian power in Germany. After the war also knwn as the seven weeks war, Prussia had annexed Schleswig and Holstein and had finally connected the eastern and western ends of Prussia.

    Franco-Prussian War

    The plan that Bismarck wanted was for the south Germans to voluntarily merge into a unified Germany. The Prussian army surrounded 83,000 French prisoners until hunger forced them to surrender. The southern Germans gave into Prussian leadership and the war ended with Wilhelm being crowned Kaiser.
  • Papal States Conquered

    By conquering the Papal states, the city of Rome was taken over by Italy. It became the capital. However, the pope still governed Vatican city.
  • King Wilhelm I crowned Kaiser

    Wilhelm is named the Kaiser, also known as emporer, when the palace of Versaille was captured by Prussian forces.
