Chris doesn't think about how his actions impact others around him. His family is clearly worried, but it doesn't seem to be a concern to Chris. He is focused on what he wants and doesn't think about his family.

Chris appears to like working for Westberg. Westberg gives Chris jobs. But when Westberg goes to serve time, Chris isn't able to get jobs. He has trouble in society, but Westberg was able to see Chris for the hard-worker he was.

He continues to survive dangerous situations. His canoe needed to be beached and he encountered high winds. This is significant because every time Chris encounters a dangerous situation, he seems to find a way to survive.

He has trouble being in society. He is more comfortable being along and he goes back to his reckless behavior. He would have been safe had he chosen to stay in LA and work. But he chooses to leave this safe environment.

Chris doesn't accept the advice or help of Jim. Jim tries to warn Chris that he isn't prepared for his trip and "won't survive". Chris ignores this warning. Had he listened to Chris, he may have been better prepared for the trip and increased his chance of survival.

Chris finally realizes that he is in a situation that could kill him. He has no hope of finding anyone. He finally acknowleges that he is in a bad situation.
