    Chris doesn't think about how his actions impact others around him. His family is clearly worried, but it doesn't seem to be a concern to Chris. He is focused on what he wants and doesn't think about his family.

    Chris appears to like working for Westberg. Westberg gives Chris jobs. But when Westberg goes to serve time, Chris isn't able to get jobs. He has trouble in society, but Westberg was able to see Chris for the hard-worker he was.

    He is denied entry and sneeks into Mexico without ID. Chris is reckless and puts himself in constant danger.

    He continues to survive dangerous situations. His canoe needed to be beached and he encountered high winds. This is significant because every time Chris encounters a dangerous situation, he seems to find a way to survive.

  • Went to Los Angeles to get and I.D. he had to get a job, and felt uncomfortable in society and was anxious to get back on the road

    He has trouble being in society. He is more comfortable being along and he goes back to his reckless behavior. He would have been safe had he chosen to stay in LA and work. But he chooses to leave this safe environment.
  • After he got his I.D. he returned to Detrital Wash. He buries his backpack and ID

    Chris goes into Las Vegas without any money or ID. He is able to survive for a while. Chris again is reckless, but is able to survive. He probably doesn't think there is any situation he can't survive.

    Chris makes a few attempts to get back into society. But they always seem to fail.

    Chris makes attempts to be with other people. But he keeps shoiwng that he prefers to be alone and have his freedom.

  • Jim Gallien gives Chris a ride to Denali national Park

    Chris doesn't accept the advice or help of Jim. Jim tries to warn Chris that he isn't prepared for his trip and "won't survive". Chris ignores this warning. Had he listened to Chris, he may have been better prepared for the trip and increased his chance of survival.
  • Chris writes an SOS letter letting people know he needs help

    Chris finally realizes that he is in a situation that could kill him. He has no hope of finding anyone. He finally acknowleges that he is in a bad situation.
