    McCandless goes out to hike in Nevada at Lake Mead

  • Abandoning the car

    Chris abandons his car and puts everything he had into a backpack and starts hiking

  • Chris's parents

    Chris's parents haven't heard from Chris so they go visit but only to find him missing

  • The ticket

    Chris gets a ticket in Willow Creek, California for hitchhiking

  • Meeting Wayne Westerberg

    Westerberg picks Chris up

  • His job

    Chris worked at the grain elevator until there was no more work so he left and resumed his trip

  • The canoe

    Chris hitchhikes a ride to Needles, California. Walks through a desert until he gets to Topock, Arizona which he bought a canoe

  • Mexico

    Chris reaches the Mexican border

  • The cave

    There is high winds and Chris finds a cave and stays there for 10 days

  • The storm

    When he gets back on the Canoe there is a storm that he almost drowns in having him abandon it and go back north

  • Getting caught

    When he gets to the U.S. border he gets caught my immigration and spends the night in jail

  • The backpack

    Chris buries his backpack and hitchhikes to Las Vegas

  • His job

    He arrives in Bullhead City, Arizona and works at McDonald's for two months while living in an empty RV

    Chris and Ronald Franz meet near Salon Sea in California

  • Alaska

    Chris leaves Carthage and heads for Alaska

  • Postcards

    He sends Burres and Franz postcards in Seattle

  • The bus

    He finds an old bus by the Sushana River and decides to stay there

  • His death

    Chris died in Alaska on the Stampede Trail in the bus
