  • First Thoughts

    J.C.R. Licklider outlined the idea of multiple computers connected in a network to hold data in his book "Man-Computer Symbiosis"
  • It Begins

    J. Licklider was hired by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to connect all of the computers at the U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon, and SAC Headquarters into one functional system.
  • Moving Forward

    Robert Taylor, the head of information processing at DARPA, saw Licklider's idea's potental and hired an MIT graduate to help him build a larger network. The first link was made between UCLA and Stanford Research Institute at 10:30 pm.
  • INTERNET

    Robert Kahn of DARPA and ARPANET heading a project to reformulate the standards of the network and made hosts resposible to the reliability of the server. All the protocols were combined into the book Specification of Internet Transmission Control Program, and that was the first time the term internet was used.
  • Network Coverage Grows

    The International Packet Switcher Service originally created in 1978 by the British Post Office, Western Union International, and Tymnet expanded from just Canda and the US to also cover Canada, Hong Kong, and Austriallia.
  • Hosts Rise

    A host is someone who runs a website from their computer. At this point the internet had 213 hosts and gained a new one every 20 days.
  • Public Use

    In 1992 the internet transformed from just research and military use to a service that could be used by the public to send information.
  • WWW

    Berners-Lee received the Millennium technology prize for developing the public text base world wide web system.
  • Internet Reaches Space

    The first link between low orbit levels and earth was made on this date when astronaut T. J. Creamer updated hist twitter in the atmosphere
  • Today

    Today the internet is used by over 3,000,000,000 users daily and has almost any information or product readily avaliable.
