  • The Sepoy Rebellion

    The Sepoy Rebellion
    Indian soldiers that worked for the British during the British rule were known as the sepoys. When British started to advance on their technology, they came up with new rifle carriages. The only thing was, to make it fire, it had to be greased with pig fat. It is against the Hindu religion to eat or taste any kind of animal. When they requested the British to use another rifle, their answer was no. The Indians refused to use those rifles and revolted.
  • Mohandas Gandhi

    Mohandas Gandhi
    Gandhi had Hindu belifs and Christian traditions. The writings of Henry David Thoreau inspired him. Gandhi also believed in Civil Disobedience.

    Formation of the Indian National Congress
    It has been responsible for many of the drastic changes in Indian politics. So much so that leaders like Mahatma Gandhi who rose out of it succeeded in not only seeing changes in their country but in the entire world.

    Formation of the Muslim League
    The Muslim League was the political organization of India and Pakistan. Its original purpose was to safeguard the political rights of Muslims in India. An early leader in the League, Muhammad Iqbal, was one of the first to propose the creation of a separate Muslim India.
  • Salt March

    Salt March
    In 1930 Britian forbade Indians to make salt. Then Gandhi led 50,000 followers on a 200 mile march to the coast. Then they illegally made salt from the sea. All of them were arrested including Gandhi.
  • Quit India campaign

    Quit India campaign
    The Quit India campaign was a policy of non-cooperation with the British. It was launched in response to Gandhi's call for independence. The call for Indian independence was in response to the British’s colonial power.
  • Hindu-Muslim Conflict

    Hindu-Muslim Conflict
    During the 1920s and 1930s, divisions began to grow between the Muslim League and the Hindu Congress Party. The Muslim leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah wanted a separate nation. Differences in religious beliefs led to clashes. Also, Muslims feared their rights would not be respected.
  • Indian Independence Act

    Indian Independence Act
    During WWII, Indians refused to support the British in the war unless they were granted immediate indepencence. Of course, the British refused. They then began the Quit India movement.
  • Gandhi Assassinated

    Gandhi Assassinated
    Gandhi was outside on the steps of a building where a prayer meeting was going to take place. He was surrounded by a part of his family and some followers when three gunshots killed him.
