India signs a treaty with the Soviet Union, which is good in a way because it shows that India is growing and is big enough to have relations with a major union. -

Indira Gandhi assassinated by Sikh bodyguards, afterwards her son takes over. Things are getting violent enough that head powers are being assassinated. -

Hindu nationalist BJP emerge as largest single party, pushing congress out of the way and putting a new power in charge. -
