  • East India Company

    The East India Company was created after Britain said that they wanted to trade with India. Through the creation of this trading company, a full trade circle was set up and the East India Company became one of the most well known trading companies in the world.
  • Battle of Plassey

    The British were fighting the French, who were backed by the Indians, and defeated them. Once the British took control of the East India Company; this is when it became such a 'booming' business.
  • Prohibition of Sati

    Sati is the "traditional Hindu practive of a widow immolating herself on her husband's funeral pyre" (donathlk.files.wordpress.com). This was the practice of burning the widowed woman on top of her deceased husband's grave. During this year this practice was prohibited by a social reform lead by Dayanand Sraswatie of Arya Samaj and Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The "Indian Rebellion"

    This was a war of independence that was intended to unify India from the British and bring power back to Bahadur Shah, the old emperor of India.
  • Government of India Act

    Great Britain took control of India and in in 1877 the new empress of India was crowned: Queen Victoria.
  • India National Congress

    Also known as the Congress Party; this is still a major political party in India; this is the party that helped the most during India's struggle to gain control again instead of the British
  • Rise of Gandhi

    Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1869 to 1949. he was both a large spiritual leader and political leader. Was the leader of campaigns for women's rights, religious and ethnic freedom, discrimination against social class, and the independence of India from Great Britain.
  • Partition of India

    This is possibly the worst events to happen in the history of India's political history. This partition of India turned the Hindus and Muslims against each other. The two had been living in peace for hundreds of years and with the partition, India was split into the Dominion of Pakistan and the Union of India.
  • Indian Independence

    India declared its independence and became an independent nation again at midnight on 15 August 1947.
  • Assassinationg of Gandhi

    During a prayer meeting in 1949, a Hindu fanatic assassinated Gandhi.
  • Federal Republic

    With a new constitution put in place, within the Commonwealth India became a federal republic.
